Fool Night Anime Announced: Sunrise and Shaft Unite for a Dystopian Sci-Fi Series on Netflix in 2026

Steven Reynolds June 23, 2026

In a standout reveal at Netflix’s Anime Studio Focus panel during the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the streaming giant announced an anime adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda’s critically praised dystopian manga Fool Night.

The project marks the first-ever collaboration between powerhouse studios Sunrise and Shaft, blending Sunrise’s expertise in epic storytelling and mechanical design with Shaft’s signature stylized, atmospheric visuals.

The series is set to premiere worldwide exclusively on Netflix in 2026 as an original net animation (ONA), with Netflix dropping a visual, a teaser trailer and more.

And yep, from the Fool Night trailer, this one looks absolutely gorgeous and sounds amazing!

Fool Night Plot: A Sunless World and the Cost of Survival

Fool Night (original Japanese title: フールナイト), written and illustrated by Kasumi Yasuda, began serialization in Shogakukan’s seinen magazine Big Comic Superior on November 13th, 2020, and remains ongoing.

As of early 2026, twelve tankōbon volumes have been released in Japan. Viz Media also licensed the English edition, with the first volume launching in June 2024.

The story unfolds in a bleak future where thick clouds have shrouded Earth for over a century, blocking sunlight and triggering ecological collapse. Plants wither, oxygen levels plummet, and humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. In response, scientists develop “transfloration”—a controversial technology that transforms humans into plant-like beings (sometimes called “spirit flowers”) capable of producing oxygen. Initially reserved for the terminally ill, the process later attracts desperate volunteers lured by substantial financial rewards.

The protagonist, Toshiro Kamiya, is a young man trapped in poverty. Once aspiring to be a musician, he now struggles to support his ailing mother and cover medical costs. When personal tragedies mount and hope fades, he faces an agonizing choice: undergo transfloration himself to secure money for his family.

The narrative delves into profound ethical questions about bodily autonomy, sacrifice, class disparity, and humanity’s relationship with nature, while incorporating elements of body horror and quiet psychological tension. Kamiya’s journey takes unexpected turns as he gains the ability to communicate with plants, opening new layers to the story’s exploration of life, death, and coexistence.

An no, it’s no wonder Fool Night is getting an anime adaptation, as the manga has earned strong recognition, including a nomination for the 2022 Next Manga Award in the print category, a high ranking in Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (12th for male readers in 2023), and a Best Comic nomination at the 2023 Angoulême International Comics Festival.

It has also been praised for its atmospheric artwork, thoughtful world-building, and unflinching look at moral gray areas in a dying world.

Anime Production by Sunrise and Shaft: A Historic Studio Partnership

The adaptation was formally announced on June 23th, 2026 (local time), during Netflix’s panel at Annecy.

Early rumors and leaks had circulated for months about a possible anime adaptation, but the official reveal included teaser visuals showcasing the series’ eerie aesthetic: barren, cloud-covered landscapes contrasted with glowing neon lights and lush, otherworldly plant life in a world of eternal twilight.

Key Fool Night staff includes:

  • Director: Atsuyuki Yukawa (with Ryou Shimura)
  • Series composition/scripts: Jin Tanaka (Oshi no Ko)
  • Character designs: Robert Satou
  • Music: Tatsuya Kato (Dr. Stone)
  • Sound director: Yota Tsuruoka (A Silent Voice)

The production is handled jointly by Sunrise (known for the Gintama franchise, Cowboy Bebop, and Code Geass) and Shaft (famous for the distinctive, inventive styles of March Comes In Like a Lion and the Monogatari series).

Industry observers are particularly excited about how these contrasting strengths might merge to visualize Yasuda’s haunting, plant-infused dystopia.

Voice cast highlights (confirmed at announcement):

Toshiro Kamiya
is played by Kōki Uchiyama (Izumi in Horimiya)
Yomiko Hourai (Kamiya’s childhood friend and key supporting character) is voiced by Minako Kotobuki (Tsumugi in K-On!!)

What Fans Can Expect out of Fool Night?

The teaser material just released emphasizes visual contrast like dead, frozen environments against vibrant artificial flora and glowing cityscapes, thus promising a striking audiovisual experience.

Given the manga’s mature themes of poverty-driven sacrifice, ethical dilemmas around body modification, and environmental collapse, the anime is likely to retain a dark, introspective tone with moments of body horror and emotional weight. Thankfully, the Netflix platform should allow for a faithful, uncensored adaptation aimed at a global audience.

Creator Kasumi Yasuda has expressed gratitude for the adaptation bringing her story to a wider audience, celebrating the milestone with fans online. And, yes, she is probably thrilled it was picked up by Netflix.

With its timely themes of climate crisis, inequality, and human resilience then, Fool Night arrives at a moment when dystopian sci-fi resonates strongly. The Sunrise × Shaft partnership adds significant creative firepower, positioning the series as one of the most intriguing anime projects of 2026.

Whether you’re a longtime manga reader eager to see the transfloration process and plant-communication elements animated or a newcomer drawn to atmospheric sci-fi, Fool Night then is shaping up to be a must-watch.

Mark your calendars for the 2026 Netflix premiere. The full details on exact timing and episode count are expected closer to launch.

Meanwhile, stay tuned for more updates as additional staff, trailers, and cast announcements roll out in the coming months, as we will keep you in the loop here at Baozi Buns.

After all, this could be the dark, thought-provoking hit that defines the year for many anime fans, right?
