Oedo Fire Slayer art style is really sweet
One of the things that caught my attention when the upcoming Oedo Fire Slayer – The Legend of Phoenix (aka Hikuidori: Ushuu Boro Tobi-gumi) anime series was first announced, and character visuals were released, was its pretty art style.
Well, that and that it’s another samurai-themed series and, as a big fan of series like Blue Miburo and Rurouni Kenshin, I’m always up for that.
Now, with the release of the first Oedo Fire Slayer trailer, I am even more invested in this one as the historical anime’s plot about a group of samurai putting out fires looks both unusual and cool.
And that art style gives off a wonderfully Japanese aesthetic.

Oedo Fire Slayer gets new voice cast
The new Oedo Fire Slayer trailer also introduces several of the anime’s main characters and their voice actors:

- Seijuro is being voiced by Kensho Ono (Souji in Blue Miburo)
The two latest voice cast members announced today on the anime’s X account are:

Oedo Fire Slayer – The Legend of Phoenix production details
The upcoming historical anime is based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Shogo Imamura. The manga has still to receive an official English translation.
Its anime adaptation is being chief directed by Hajime Kamegaki (Puzzle & Dragon) with Hiroshi Yasumi directing.
Ryusuke Mori (Kashita Maryoku wa “Revo Barai” de Kyousei Choushuu) is in charge of series composition and scripts, and with SynergySp (A Gatherer’s Adventure in Isekai) animating.
Amuse Creative Studio describes the Oedo Fire Slayer fun-sounding story like this:
The fire extinguishing samurai who stopped the great fire is called “The fire-eating bird”. Gengo Matsunaga, once known as the “Fire-eating Bird”, was the best fire-fighting samurai in Edo. But he had resigned from the fire brigade for a specific reason, and then suddenly received an invitation to serve in the Shinjo clan instead.
The problem is the Shinjo clan’s fire-fighting team has no money and no personnel and is looked down upon by those around them. With the encouragement of his wife, Miyuki, Gengo decides to accept the offer and to rebuild the collapsed fire-fighting clan as its chairman.
Gengo and his friends, all of whom have their own peculiarities, struggle to “save any life”, despite being ridiculed as “ragged steeplejacks”(= the ‘Boro-Tobi-Gumi’.),
Meanwhile, in Edo, a mysterious series of suspicious fires the locals call “foxfires” keep popping up.
Look out for Oedo Fire Slayer – The Legend of Phoenix premiering in Japan on CBC, TBS, and 28 other channels on January 11th, 2026, with new episodes dropping every Sunday thereafter. It will also hit our screens internationally around the same time.
