New trailer, visual, and cast for Reborn as a Space Mercenary – I’m ready for liftoff, aren’t you?
It’s on its way
I’ve been keeping an eye on the Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! anime ever since it was announced, and today’s updates just made the wait for October feel a whole lot longer.
That’s because the official team dropped a brand-new main trailer, a slick key visual, and announced two additional cast members who, I might add, are pretty stellar.
As someone who’s been reading this light novel series since Seven Seas started publishing the English editions, I’m genuinely excited about how this adaptation is shaping up.
So, let me break down what we got for you, eh?
The Trailer: FLOW Brings the Energy
The new trailer is exactly what I wanted from a sci-fi isekai about a guy who wakes up piloting the strongest starship.
It’s packed with space battles, shows off Hiro’s growing crew, and gives us a solid feel for the show’s tone. The whole thing is set to the opening theme “UNSTOPPABLE” by FLOW, and honestly, that’s a perfect match.
FLOW has been delivering anime bangers for years (‘7-seven-‘, their The Seven Deadly Sins‘ theme song, is still one of my faves years after it released), and this one sounds like it’ll be stuck in my head all season already as well.
If you haven’t watched the new Reborn as a Space Mercenary trailer yet, it leans hard into the action while still giving you glimpses of the characters that make the series fun. It’s not just laser fire and explosions, though, as it looks like there’s personality here too.
And sure, we have the same anime ‘experts’ (ie: viewers) bitching about how “lame” this will be from nothing more than a cursory look at the trailer.
Luckily, I’m someone who reserves my judgement until an anime has actually been released before I trash it, aren’t you?
Two New Cast Members join Reborn as a Space Mercenary
The production also confirmed two new additions to the voice cast today, and they’re both solid picks:
Kana Ueda as Shoko — If you know anime, you know Ueda. She’s Rin Tohsaka from Fate/stay night, which is one of those roles that pretty much guarantees I’ll pay attention to whatever she’s in. And I’m curious to see how she handles Shoko, a significant character from the light novels.
Saori Onishi as Mei — Onishi is currently voicing Elizabeth Leiston in A Livid Lady’s Guide to Getting Even, so she’s having a busy year. She’s got range, though, and I’m interested to see how Mei fits into the anime adaptation of the story.
Visuals for both characters were also released.
The two newly-named voice actors join the already-announced main cast:
Makoto Furukawa as Hiro, Konomi Inagaki as Mimi, Anna Nagase as Elma, and Haruka Shiraishi as Serena.
Quick Refresher: What’s This Anime About?
For anyone who might have missed the earlier announcements, Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! adapts Ryuto and Tetsuhiro Nabeshima’s light novel series.
The premise: Satou Takahiro gets transported from his ordinary life into the world of his favorite video game, and into a universe full of space battles, interstellar colonies, and all the danger that comes with them.
He becomes “Hiro” the mercenary, armed with a tricked-out ship and a growing crew. There are space pirates to fight, people to rescue, and plenty of chaos along the way. Yep, sounds cheesy but it’s actually pretty fun.
As I mentioned earlier, Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the official English versions of both the light novels and Shunichi Matsui’s manga adaptation, so if you want to get ahead of the anime, the source material is readily available
The Production Team
Norihiko Nagahama (The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord’s Army Was a Human) is directing at studio A-CAT (Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?!), with Takamitsu Kono (She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man) handling series composition, Masami Sueoka (The Beginning After the End) on character designs, and Kenta Higashoji (Princess Connect! Re:Dive) composing the music.
The ending theme “MY WAY” will be performed by ASTERISM, which gives us a nice contrast to FLOW’s opening track .
When and Where to Watch Reborn as a Space Mercenary Anime Adaptation
Reborn as a Space Mercenary premieres October 4th, and Crunchyroll will simulcast it in select regions.
Based on the trailer and the talent involved, this one’s going on my must-watch list for the fall season. The combination of space battles, a protagonist who’s actually living his best game-obsessed life, and a solid voice cast has me optimistic.
And, if the animation is decent, I’ll be sold.
In other words, if you’re into sci-fi isekai that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this might be worth checking out.
