While I know some people didn’t enjoy just-ended Season 1 of anime ‘Black Torch‘, I am definitely not one of them.
For me, while the animated supernatural-themed series is certainly not perfect, I loved the art style, the animation is decent, the voice acting is extraordinarily good, especially the voice actors for Jiro and Rago (Suzuki Ryouta and Ueda Youji), and the plot is hella fun.
Sure, the story could have been better developed, and the pacing could have been far more consistent but, considering ‘Black Torch‘ was adapted from a short-lived eight-year-old manga series, I’m just happy with what we got and thrilled for mangaka Tsuyoshi Takaki that he got to see his amazing world animated on film.
Aren’t you?

Of course, I am still holding out for a Season 2 of ‘Black Torch‘ — an original anime, of course, as there isn’t any more of the manga to adapt — and, weirdly, I do still think we may get one. (Okay, call me delusional if you like. I’m cool with that!)
Especially as the anime was originally created as a low-budget project targeting international audiences, rather than Japanese, and it has performed extremely well overseas (not so much in Japan, however, where it has barely earned any traction).

For instance, it was the #2 most-watched show on Crunchyroll at one point, and is still earning a high 4.7 out of 5 from almost 36K viewers over there now that it’s ended.
Over 100,000 My Anime List users are also signed up to be either watching ‘Black Torch‘ or planning on doing, and that’s a very good audience for a low-budget anime on that platform.
I am also hoping there’s a hint in Amagi’s final works about any upcoming Season 2:
“I pray that you find a new foe to fight and, when you do, that you use your strength to force them into submission… May you forever be strong, Azuma Jiro“.
So, for now at least, I will just sit over here with my fingers crossed, and then cheer like crazy if more episodes of this incredibly fun anime eventually drop our way.
How about you? Are you just as delusional as me?
Watch all 12 episodes of ‘Black Torch‘ on Crunchyroll now.
