What is the plot of The Ravages of Time donghua? Why is it worth watching?

Michelle Topham January 26, 2025

Huo Feng Liao Yuan (火凤燎原), also known as The Ravages of Time, is a highly acclaimed Chinese donghua (animated series) based on the manhua (Chinese comic) of the same name by Chan Mou.

The story is a reimagining of the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, and blends historical events with intricate political intrigue, military strategy, and complex character dynamics.

Here’s a detailed explanation of the plot.

When does The Ravages of Time take place?

The story is set during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the subsequent Three Kingdoms period, a time of chaos, warfare, and constant political maneuvering in ancient China.

The donghua looks at the three states that are, today, known as The Three Kingdoms, and specifically concentrates on the military battles, the battles of each kingdom’s war lords, and the political intrigue that goes on behind the scenes.

Unlike traditional retellings of this era, The Ravages of Time donghua takes a unique approach by focusing on the psychological and strategic aspects of its characters, portraying them as master tacticians and manipulators.

Whether they were or not in real life, it still makes for riveting viewing.

Especially as the battle scenes are some of the best, and most unique, in current day donghua right now.

Ravages of Time main characters

1. Sima Yi
One of the central protagonists, Sima Yi is a brilliant strategist and a key figure in the rise of the Sima family. He is portrayed as a cunning and calculating individual who plays a long game to achieve his ambitions.

Sima Yi’s journey is one of survival and ambition as he navigates the treacherous political landscape of the Three Kingdoms.

2. Lu Bu
Known as the Flying General, Lu Bu is one of the most feared war lords of the era.

However, in The Ravages of Time donghua he is depicted as more than just a brute force, but instead is a complex character with his own motivations and struggles.

Lu Bu’s story explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the cost of power, with Lu Bu himself doing much of the betraying.

3. Cao Cao
The ambitious, ruthless and very manipulative warlord who becomes one of the most powerful figures of the era.

Cao Cao is portrayed as a master strategist and a visionary leader, but also as a man willing to make morally ambiguous decisions if it means he will achieve his goals.

Divide and conquer is what he knows best.

4. Liu Bei
The virtuous and compassionate leader of the Shu Kingdom, Liu Bei is depicted as a man of principle, but his idealism is constantly tested by the harsh realities of the world.

Gaining peace is Liu Bei’s most important goal. Even though it is usually almost impossible to achieve.

5. Sun Quan
The leader of the Wu Kingdom, Sun Quan is the second son of the powerful general and politician Sun Jian.

He is a pragmatic and resourceful ruler who seeks to maintain his kingdom’s independence amidst all the chaos.

The plot of The Ravages of Time donghua

The narrative begins with the decline of the Eastern Han Dynasty, as corrupt officials and warlords vie for power.

Meanwhile, the emperor is nothing more than a figurehead, and the empire is on the brink of collapse.

Sima Yi emerges as a key player in this turbulent era, using his intellect and strategic prowess to manipulate events from behind the scenes. He forms alliances, betrays rivals, and orchestrates complex schemes to ensure his survival and the rise of his family.

Meanwhile, Lu Bu, who is often portrayed as a villain in other retellings of the Three Kingdoms story, is given a more nuanced role. His actions are driven by a desire for recognition and respect, and his relationship with his advisor Chen Gong adds depth to his character.

The story also explores the rise of the Three Kingdoms  — Wei, Shu, and Wu — and the intricate web of alliances, betrayals, and battles that define this period of Chinese history.

Themes of loyalty, ambition, and the cost of power are a large part of the narrative as the story continues, and as each character grapples with their own moral dilemmas and the often terrible consequences of their actions.

Key Themes of The Ravages of Time donghua

1. Political Intrigue —  The series delves deeply into the secret plots of its characters, showcasing their ability to manipulate events and outwit their opponents.

It is that political intrigue that makes the donghua so fascinating, as you are constantly left wondering in which direction the key characters will pull the plot next. And, yes, if you are not familiar with the story of The Three Kingdoms, you are often surprised.

2. Military Strategy — Battles in the Chinese donghua are not just about brute force; they are won through careful planning, deception, and psychological warfare.

The battle scenes themselves are beautifully choreographed in the donghua, and incredibly exciting to watch.

3. Complex Characters — Unlike many other donghua, the characters in The Ravages of Time are actually multi-dimensional, with their own motivations, flaws, and moral ambiguities on full display.

This makes for a fascinating watch, as you quickly find yourself rooting for some, but not for others. Even if the ones you end up rooting for aren’t always the most moral.

4. Historical Reimagining — While based on historical events, The Ravages of Time donghua, just like the manhua it’s adapted from, takes creative liberties to present a fresh and engaging perspective on the Three Kingdoms period.

Some viewers love it, others don’t. It all depends on if you want your history told straight or a bit twisted.

Animation and style of The Ravages of Time donghua

The donghua adaptation of The Ravages of Time donghua features a gorgeous mix of 2D and 3D animation, with a focus on beautifully detailed character designs and dynamic battle scenes.

The art style in the donghua is dark and gritty but also quite beautiful, as it reflects the harsh and unforgiving world of the Three Kingdoms.

The series also emphasizes the psychological and strategic aspects of warfare, with well-written and often intense dialogue and mind games playing a central role.

Why The Ravages of Time donghua is worth watching

From the very first episode of the first season of The Ravages of Time, this one became one of my favorites, and for many solid reasons.

A unique perspective — The series offers a fresh and innovative take on the Three Kingdoms period, focusing primarily on the psychological and strategic elements of the story, while fleshing out the main characters and making many of them deeply relatable.

Complex characters — The characters are richly developed, with their own motivations and moral dilemmas. Yes, many of them are not particularly nice people, but they are interesting to watch.

Engaging Plot — The intricate political intrigue and military strategy make for a compelling and thought-provoking narrative.

So much so, every episode seems to speed by as it moves from battle to battle, and political machination to political machination.

Overall, The Ravages of Time donghua is a masterful and extremely entertaining reimagining of the Three Kingdoms period, offering a unique blend of historical drama, political intrigue, and military strategy.

If you enjoy complex characters, intricate plots, and a fresh perspective on a well-known historical era, this donghua is definitely worth watching.

The Ravages of Time donghua’s first season premiered in April, 2023 with Season 2 hitting streaming services on January 16th this year.
