Though I Am an Inept Villainess anime drops very cute idol-themed visual
The newly-released idol-themed key visual for Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court has just dropped, and it’s bursting with energy.
Because, yes, the anime’s latest artwork showcases our cute leads in dazzling stage outfits that fuse courtly elegance with pop-idol flair.
Heck, they even have on head-Iworn mics. How adorable is that?
The tagline “On a night when a comet shone brightly, the fate of the two swapped” also sets the tone for a wild body-swap twist.
And, yep, the title has been changed to ‘Though I Am an Inept Idol‘ to fit the theme.

What’s the premise of the Though I Am an Inept Villainess anime?
In the Kingdom of Ei, five influential clans each present a maiden to the imperial court, but only one will become empress.
However, two maidens of very different standing are quickly set to become the story’s protagonists.
The delicate and admired “butterfly” maiden Reirin Kou, and the cunning “rat” maiden and her rival, Keigetsu Shu.
As things initially suggest, Reirin is a shoe-in for empress as the crown prince adores her but, through a sudden mysterious event under a brilliant comet, the two girls’ bodies are switched, and that script is flipped entirely.
Due to this, the beloved butterfly wakes up in the dungeon in the rat’s place, and now she has to navigate life (and court politics) in a completely new body and status.
What’s fun is that, while the moment might feel like dramatic catastrophe just killed Reirin’s chances dead, the swap actually gives Reirin new possibilities (and muscle, in some cases), and a huge chance to rewrite her fate.
This blend of court intrigue, identity-shuffle, and even idol aesthetics promises something refreshingly off-beat about this one, doesn’t it?

The anime adaptation scoop
The light-novel series by Satsuki Nakamura has been green-lit as a TV anime for 2026 for quite some time now.
Production is being handled by Doga Kobo, (who also beautifully animated Oshi no Ko), with the anime directed by Mitsue Yamazaki, series composition by Yoshiko Nakamura and character designs by Ai Kikuchi.
While an exact premiere date hasn’t been locked in yet, it has been announced an early to mid-2026 premiere is on the books.
Given the many beautiful visual reveals recently, and the animation studio’s pedigree, it’s not just my expectations that are rising for this one. I’ll bet yours are too.
Why I’m so keen on Though I Am an Inept Villainess
The body-swap hook in this one is genuinely fresh in what is often a been-there-watched-that villainess setting.
In fact, instead of just being the usual “evil girl gets a second chance” trope, this promises role-reversal, identity play, loads of intrigue, and court drama all at once.
And an adored protagonist who, it appears, takes every opportunity to cash in on her body swap fate.
Heck, we might even get the actual villainess eventually turning over a new life as well, right?
With Doga Kobo on board too, the production quality looks promising, and the contrast between the “butterfly” and the “rat” imagery gives the story a strong thematic and aesthetic identity that looks interesting.
Yep, Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court definitely looks like one to check out when it drops next year.
