New Gu An wallpapers out as protagonist ups his annihilation of anyone evil – best donghua of 2026?
I have to admit I had high expectations for ongoing donghua Gu An (aka Yi Zhan Cangqiong) even before it dropped its first episodes.
After all, it is animated by Chinese animation studio Shenman Culture who has been doing a superb job with both The Demon Hunter and Slay the Gods for a couple of years now.
But even I was blown away by the high level of animation, character design and visual design Gu An has been exhibiting since its first episode premiered on July 28th.
Such beautiful graphics, I stop and rewind numerous scenes in every episode just to take screenshots as I am amazed by the mind-blowing visual design as protagonist Gu An goes through his life annihilating anyone evil getting in his way.
Throw in that each episode features genuinely hilarious scenes populated by some of the weirdest characters, and shoved in among the seriousness of putting a bullet through a vile murderer’s brain, and this is one of the more unusual donghua released in the last few years as well.
I am happy to say the donghua also seems to be popular among Chinese animation fans (both Chinese and non), and that hopefully means we will be getting more than just a first season.
Fingers crossed, as I would say it should be in contention for best donghua of 2026.
Particularly as, if Shenman Culture can keep up this level of buttery smooth animation, mind-blowingly beautiful visuals, a well-written plot and very cool characters throughout its run, I will happily watch the rest of the season and being cheering for Season 2 as well.

New Gu An wallpapers released
The gorgeous quality of visual design I am blathering on about is also always evident in the beautiful Gu An desktop wallpapers that Shenman Culture drops several times a month.
The latest have just been released and, along with a couple featuring the kickass protagonist in action as he goes after Wu Lu and Pei Zhishu, the latest villains who need to be brought to justice (vigilante style, of course), we also got wallpapers of two “old friends” who suddenly showed up as well.
The now-zombified Luo Qi, and the truly annoying Han Ya, who uses her sexuality to get what she wants.
Although I have a feeling Gu An isn’t buying especially as, in Episode 8 of Gu An, which dropped this week, he patently ignores her command to not kill Pei Zhishu, and does so anyway. (And can I say “Yay”, because that guy was vile!).
Anyway, enjoy the latest Gu An wallpapers as, I think, they do a great job of showing the events in the latest action-filled episode.
Episode 8 itself is now streaming on YOUKU for subscribers, and on YOUKU Anime’s YouTube channel. New episodes release on the same platform every Tuesday, although I will point out they drop a little later in the west than they do in China.
