Sometimes Even Reality Is a Lie! Manga Gets TV Anime in 2027 – Here’s What We Know So Far!
The popular romantic comedy manga Sometimes Even Reality Is a Lie! (Japanese: Genjitsu mo Tamani wa Usowotsuku) written and illustrated by Niichi has been officially greenlit for a television anime adaptation set to premiere in 2027.
Manga creator Niichi announced the news on July 19th, 2026, sharing a celebratory illustration to mark the occasion. The mangaka then released a “bonus illustration” to celebrate a few hours later. (Check out both of them below!)
The project marks the first anime adaptation for the series, which began as a web manga, and has since built a dedicated following for its lighthearted take on gamer culture, mistaken identities, and budding romance.
From Web Serial to Print Success
Niichi launched the crossdressing-themed story in August, 2018, initially posting chapters on Twitter (now X) and Pixiv.
The manga started out as a doujinshi project but quickly gained traction, leading to commercial tankōbon releases under Kadokawa’s Chukei Publishing imprint (Kitora Comics label).
The first volume hit shelves on July 31st, 2020. As of February, 2026, eight volumes have been published, with Volume 9 due out in September, 2026.
The series has also been licensed for English release by J-Novel Club, with digital volumes available since June 2022.
It has earned a solid reception online since then, holding an average score around 7.53 on MyAnimeList from thousands of users, while being praised for its wholesome slice-of-life humor and relatable character dynamics.
A Story Born from Lies (and Friendship)
As for the plot of the manga, it follows Kaoru Terasaki, a high school boy who plays an MMORPG using a female avatar named Kaori. He forms a close online friendship with a player named Nanami, who uses a male avatar. Excited to meet in real life, Kaoru worries his friend will be disappointed to discover he’s actually a guy.
The surprise is mutual: Nanami turns out to be Nanami Osaka, a girl who had been playing as a male character. To make matters more complicated, Nanami has already told her enthusiastic mother and overprotective father that she’s bringing a female friend home.
The only solution? Kaoru must cross-dress as a girl to keep up appearances.
What begins with layers of deception and awkwardness evolves into a charming romantic comedy as the two gamers navigate real-life interactions, personal growth, and their evolving relationship. All while keeping up the ruse around Nanami’s family.
The story blends humor, heartfelt moments, and the awkwardness of transitioning from online to offline friendships. In my opinion, it’s a plot that should adapt beautifully to an anime series.
It’s Still Early Days for the Sometimes Even Reality Is a Lie! Anime
Details on the 2027 TV anime remain limited at this stage. No studio, director, staff, or voice cast has been announced yet, with that information expected to release in dribs and drabs as we get closer to its 2027 premiere.
The announcement also comes shortly after the manga’s conclusion, giving fans a timely way to experience the full story in animated form.
Earlier, in 2021, Kadokawa released short voiced comic videos on YouTube featuring Shun Horie as Kaoru and Nanami Yamashita as Nanami, offering a small taste of the characters’ voices, but the upcoming TV series will be a full animated production.
