New Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend visual is quite sad
Well, it is still going to be close to a year before the animated feature film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend opens in Japanese theaters (and hopefully then worldwide), at least the production committee is continuing to release promo pieces to wet our appetites.
Today’s promo piece is a quite sad key visual of Mai Sakurajima holding a microphone and looking forlornly into the camera, as people with their backs to her walk by as if she’s not visible to them.
The visual was released on the anime’s X page, with a cryptic message saying:
“Search for Touko Kirishima, Mai is in danger”.

The account also confirmed the anime’s premiere time period as some time in Fall, 2026.
Production information for Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend
Like every other release in the franchise, the Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend animated film is based on the light novel series written by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Kēji Mizoguchi.
In this case, the film is based on Volume 15, which is also the final volume in the series.
Yes, that does sadly mean the film heralds the end of the long-running franchise, while the events of the film follow on from the Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus TV anime which ended its run in September this year.
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend is being directed by Souichi Masui who has helmed every other TV anime/film in the series.
Masahiro Yokotani is also back in charge of both series composition and the screenplay, while Satomi Tamura is also returning to design those now-iconic characters.
CloverWorks is again in charge of animation production (thank heavens, as wouldn’t it have sucked to have a completely different studio finish off what has been an absolutely super series?!?!)
As for the plot of the film, Yen Press, who publishes the light novels in English, very concisely says about that:
“I’m glad I met you”.
Faced with the truth about Miori and Touko Kirishima, Sakuta must make a choice. This will be his final case of Adolescence Syndrome!
If you’re in Japan, look out for Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend arriving in movie theaters some time in Fall, 2026. For the rest of us, Crunchyroll will likely stream the film, just like it has the previous three. Fingers crossed.
