I am happy to announce the countdown to the end of the beloved “Rascal Does Not Dream of” anime saga has officially begun. And boy, are you looking forward to this as much as I am?
Kicking off that countdown is the main trailer for the highly anticipated film, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend, which was released on June 15th, 2026, and offers fans a dramatic look at the series’ climax while previewing its haunting theme song.
Haunting when you learn what’s in store for us, I might add.
The film is set to open in theaters across Japan on October 16th, 2026, and will serve as the grand conclusion to the long-running anime adaptation of Hajime Kamoshida’s light novel series.
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend trailer highlights and theme song
The new trailer provides the most extensive look yet at the film’s central conflict.
It teases a world turned upside down when the nation’s beloved actress, Mai Sakurajima, reveals her true identity as the mysterious and wildly popular internet singer, Toko Kirishima.

This revelation sets off a chain of unimaginable events, as protagonist Sakuta Azusagawa receives a desperate message from an alternate-reality version of himself: “Stop Toko Kirishima… Before reality is irreversibly rewritten“.
Accompanying these intense visuals is a preview of the film’s theme song, “Turn the World Upside Down,” performed by Toko Kirishima herself. The song’s tone perfectly matches the gravity of the situation as Sakuta fights to restore the world to its original state.

The Rascal Does Not Dream of … story’s grand finale
The film adapts the 15th and final main volume of Kamoshida’s original light novel series, which was released in Japan in October 2024.
It brings the story full circle, focusing on the resolution of “Adolescence Syndrome,” the supernatural phenomenon that has plagued the series’ characters since the original Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai TV anime premiered in 2018 .
Meanwhile, the official synopsis for Dear Friend sets the stage for an emotional and high-stakes conclusion:
As the truth about Miori and Touko Kirishima comes to light, Sakuta must make a choice that will decide everything for himself, Mai, Shouko, and everyone else affected by the syndrome. The narrative picks up with Sakuta now a university student in Kanazawa-hakkei alongside his girlfriend Mai, but the peace is shattered by precognitive dreams, social media poltergeists, and other mysterious phenomena.
The light novels’ English translation is currently published by Yen Press.
Returning cast and staff
The film, thankfully, brings back the core creative team and voice cast that have defined the series.
Soichi Masui returns to direct, with Masahiro Yokotani handling both the script and series composition. Satomi Tamura is once again in charge of character designs, while CloverWorks is also animating.
The main cast is also back, featuring Kaito Ishikawa as Sakuta Azusagawa, Asami Seto as Mai Sakurajima, and other familiar voices reprising their roles for this final chapter.
Special Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend visual and promotional campaign
To build excitement for the release, a special commemorative visual is scheduled to be unveiled on June 16th, 2026 in Japan.
This artwork will be prominently displayed on a large exterior wall of the Bic Camera Fujisawa store in Kanagawa prefecture, where it will remain on view for fans to see until October 31, 2026.
Starting June 19th, advance tickets for the film will also go on sale in Japan.
In other words, the series’ enduring popularity is evident, with the original light novels having sold over 3 million copies in total also underscoring the significance of this final adaptation.
