Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Season 1 premieres – Today in Anime History, October 7th, 2020

October 7th, 2020 – Today in Anime History: Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Season 1 premieres

On this day, October 7th, 2020, a charming and unique addition to the anime world debuted — Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear (aka Bear Bear Bear Bear in Japanese).

This series, adapted from the light novel series by Kumanano, quickly captured the hearts of viewers with its blend of fantasy, adventure, and a heartwarming premise.

Behind the Scenes of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, Season 1

Director: The helm of this series was taken by Yuu Nobuta, known for his work on High School Fleet and A Good Librarian Like a Good Shepherd. Nobuta’s direction brought a lighthearted yet adventurous spirit to the show, perfectly aligning with its source material.

Series Composition: Takashi Aoshima (Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!), who adeptly translated the light novel’s charm into a visual format, maintaining the story’s integrity while enhancing it for television.

Character Design: Character designs were handled by Yuki Nakano (A Destructive God Sits Next to Me) and Miyako Yatsu (Dive!!), whose work added a distinctively cute aesthetic that complemented the series’ whimsical nature.

Studio: The animation was produced by EMT Squared, known for their work on another bear-themed anime series Kuma Miko.

Plot Overview of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, Season 1 centers around Yuna, a rich but lonely 15-year-old high school girl who, after being summoned to a fantasy world by an annoying God, finds herself equipped with a bear costume that possesses extraordinary powers.

This costume grants her immense strength, speed, and the ability to summon bear spirit helpers. Tasked with defeating a demon threat, Yuna instead opts for a peaceful life, leveraging her powers to explore and enjoy her new world, while still helping the friends she meets along the way.

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, Season 1, Episodes 1 and 12 synopsis

The series kicks off with Episode 1 titled “Bear, Appears“.

In it, we see Yuna being transported to the town of Crimonia. Confused but intrigued, she discovers her bear suit’s capabilities in a comical yet awe-inspiring sequence.

She quickly learns that this new world operates much like an RPG, with quests, levels, and skills. Her first adventure involves helping a boy called Kai defeat a monster called Black Viper that is harming his village.

The final episode of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, Season 1 is Episode 12 “Miss Bear and Fina”

The season concludes with Yuna realizing, if she is going to be happy in her new world, she should value her friends more. That is why, by the end of Episode 12 as Fina confesses that, even though she has enjoyed her training with Gentz, she has felt lonely and missed Yuna. It is then Yuna and Fina decide to always be together.

The impact and legacy of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, Season 1

The first season of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear resonated with its audience for its light-hearted take on the isekai genre, focusing more on the everyday adventures and the joy of discovery rather than constant battles.

Its unique premise of using a bear suit as a central plot device added a layer of whimsy and charm that distinguished it in the crowded field of fantasy anime.

Even after its premiere, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear has continued to inspire fan works, merchandise and, of course, two other seasons (so far).

Thus proving its place in the hearts of anime enthusiasts as a delightful escape into a fantastical world with one of the most adorable protagonists in anime history.

And that’s the first in our new series — Today in Anime History — October 8th, 2020 — the premiere of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear.

A fun reminder about a cool isekai series, eh?
