Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube casts original VA Ryotaro Okiayu as Nube – anime auditioning for students’ VAs

The upcoming reboot of Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube has just revealed some fun updates via its official X account.
They include a Summer, 2025 release date, a trailer, a new teaser visual, and the casting of Ryotaro Okiayu as the iconic protagonist, Meisuke Nueno — aka the exorcist “Nube”.
Ryotaro Okiayu, of course, played Nube in the original 1996 anime series and the subsequent films and, from the trailer released (watch below), he seems to be thrilled to be reprising his role in the reboot.
Studio KAI (7th Time Loop) is also on board to bring the animation to life.
History of Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube
Written by Shou Makura and illustrated by Takeshi Okano, the hit manga series was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, and then eventually compiled into 31 tankōbon volumes.
Two sequels to the original manga series have also been released, with the latest ending in April, 2021, as well as a spin-off and a sequel to that.
Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube went on to be adapted into a hit anime series from Toei Animation.
That aired from April, 1996 to June, 1997, with three movies — Jigoku Sensei Nūbē, Jigoku Sensei Nūbē: Gozen 0 toki Nūbē Shisu and Jigoku Sensei Nūbē: Kyoufu no Natsu Yasumi! Asashi no Uni no Gensetsu — three OVAs, and a live-action drama also being released after it.
What is the Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube plot?
The premise looks like this:
What seems like a normal day at Dōmori Elementary is disrupted by some weird phenomenon, usually targeting one of Nūbē’s own students.
Nūbē is forced into action, most often using the power of the Demon’s Hand to assist in solving the problem, but occasionally the solution lies either in another of his spiritual weapons, or somehow reasoning with or appeasing the threatening entity.
By the end, things always seem to get back to normal, with Nūbē and his students having learned something from the experience.
Yes, it’s pretty formulaic, but still quite fun.
