What we know about The Fiery Priest 2 as Kim Nam Gil set to reprise role

Michelle Topham January 20, 2024

The Fiery Priest 2 is definitely in production

The Korean comedy crime drama The Fiery Priest was one of the most popular dramas in South Korea in 2019, eventually becoming the highest rated mini-series drama that year.

It earned star Kim Nam Gil his first ever Daesang (Grand Prize), with the drama grabbing eight awards at the SBS Drama Awards as well.

The actor also won Best Actor awards at the Busan International Film Festival, the Seoul International Drama Awards, and at the Grimae Awards.

Late last year, we learned the drama’s star Kim Nam Gil will be reprising his role in The Fiery Priest 2, meaning fans of both the K-drama and the actor are now desperate for more details about what we can expect in Season 2.

Here then is what we know about The Fiery Priest 2 so far, including when it may premiere.

Who is directing The Fiery Priest 2?

Co- director of the first season Park Bo Ram alongside Lee Myung Woo will be directing alone for The Fiery Priest 2.

Since directing the first season, the Korean director has also directed K-dramas The Penthouse: War in Life and Through the Darkness.

Who is the screenwriter for The Fiery Priest 2?

Park Jae Bum, the same screenwriter for the first season, has written the scripts for Season 2.

Since his hit series The Fiery Priest aired in 2019, the writer also penned the hit drama Vincenzo and currently has another drama — Shaman — that is in its production beginnings.

Who stars in The Fiery Priest 2?

While the entire cast has not yet been announced, Kim Nam Gil will be back in Season 2 as protagonist Kim Hae Il, with Kim Sung Kyun reprising his role as Goo Dae Young and Lee Ha Nee (aka Honey Lee) returning to play Park Kyung Sun.

Since Season 1 aired in 2019, all three main leads have been busy creating other superb dramas.

Kim Nam Gil starred as Song Ha Young in Through the Darkness, and as Van in both parts of the drama Island.

The now-43-year-old actor was also the driving force and the main lead in the superb drama Song of the Bandits, which premiered on Netflix last year.

He is the main pusher behind trying to get Netflix to approve a second season of the historical action thriller, as it really was his baby from beginning to end.

The Korean actor has also been named as one of the leads in the upcoming action thriller drama Trigger alongside Kim Young Kwang.

The Korean crime drama is scheduled to premiere in 2025.

Meanwhile, since his performance in The Fiery Priest Kim Sung Kyun played main role Park Bum Goo in the hit Netflix series D.P. and D.P. Season 2 and had another lead role as Kim Ma Nok in Grid.

He was also superb as one of three friends in the hit drama Divorce Attorney Shin in 2023 alongside Cho Seung Woo and Han Hye Jin, and Jung Moon Sung.

The 43-year-old actor’s latest main role was as Lee Jae Man in the massive hit drama Moving late last year.

Even though she got married in 2021 and had her first child in 2022, Lee Ha Nee still found time to star in drama One the Woman and in the upcoming Aema.

She is also currently the female lead in the massively popular Knight Flower, which premiered on MBC on January 12th.

What else do we know about The Fiery Priest 2?

Not much information has been released about the second series of the action crime drama as of yet.

It is expected to consist of 12 episodes, and there have been rumblings it will air in Fall, 2024.

The K-drama will again air on SBS in South Korea, although there has been no word of it returning to Viki or KOCOWA internationally as of yet.

With the drama being so highly rated for its first season, there is definitely a chance a streaming platform like Netflix may grab the rights for its second season.

Although, of course, it may be Apple TV who buys the rights, considering the first season is still streaming there.
