The Drops of God anime premieres in April 2026: A refined spin on a wine-powered classic

Steven Reynolds January 20, 2026

After years of anticipation from fans of the acclaimed manga and its various screen adaptations, The Drops of God is finally transitioning into the world of anime.

The television anime adaptation of Tadashi Agi and Shū Okimoto’s beloved wine-themed series is scheduled to premiere in April 2026 on Japanese TV networks including TOKYO MX, Kansai TV, and BS channels, with streaming planned on Crunchyroll for international audiences

The announcement marks the first full animated version of the story, which originally ran in Morning magazine from 2004 to 2014 and has sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

The narrative’s rich blend of sensory detail, emotional character dynamics, and real-world wine culture has made it a standout in seinen manga for years now, as it has influenced wine lovers and sommeliers alike.

It should be a standout as an anime series as well, as it’s so very different than what we are usually offered. Check out the recently released The Drops of God teaser trailer, and you’ll get a hint of that.

Production details and voice cast for The Drops of God

Produced by Satelight, which is a studio known for its visually engaging work, the anime is directed by Kenji Itoso (Santa Company), with Yū Mitsuru handling series composition and scripts, Takehiro Suwa crafting the character designs, and Eishi Segawa (Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master) composing the music.

Leading the voice cast is Kazuya Kamenashi as Shizuku Kanzaki, the introspective protagonist whose journey through the world of wine becomes a metaphor for personal growth.

Kamenashi’s casting is especially notable as he previously portrayed Shizuku in the 2009 live action drama series, making this a meaningful reprise of a defining role across mediums.

Joining him is Takuya Satō as Issei Tomine, and Maaya Uchida as Miyabi Shinohara, among other talented voice actors.

What is The Drops of God plot

In the story at the heart of The Drops of God, the death of famed wine critic Yutaka Kanzaki sets off a unique inheritance contest.

His will bequeaths an unparalleled wine collection to the challenger who can correctly identify the twelve heavenly “Apostles” and the one wine that surpasses them — the mythical Drops of God. The task must be completed in a year.

This competition pits Shizuku, Yutaka Kanazki’s son, against Issei, a famous wine critic and the son Yutaka adopted a week before he died.

Thus, creating not only a personal rivalry between the two men, but also an exploration of passion, identity, and sensory perception.

To celebrate the anime’s upcoming launch, for anime fans in Japan, an advanced screening of Episodes 1 and 2 is planned for February 28 at TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills in Tokyo.

Various members of the cast will also put in appearances.

With its April debut on the horizon, The Drops of God anime is poised to become one of the most intriguing and distinctive offerings of the 2026 anime season as, let’s face it, it’s not often we get a wine-themed anime series that’s also based on one of the classics.

You’ll find more information on the official The Drops of God website.
