San Xian Mi Hui is a ‘no’ for me, but have at it if Meng Zi Yi is your thing
There have been several interesting looking Chinese dramas promoted over the last few months I have been excited about, only to discover Meng Zi Yi is the female lead.
An immediate ‘never ever watch’ for me after suffering through most of The Princess’s Gambit, as the woman’s acting “skills” are so poor, she ruins almost every scene.
Sadly, that now also applies to the fantasy romance mystery San Xian Mi Hui, which stars Meng Zi Yi and Wang Hong Yi, and just passed 500,000 reservations today.
Another Chinese mystery drama that features a unique plot, but is still a no-no-absolutely-no for me because… yeah.
The announcement about San Xian Mi Hui‘s 500,000 reservations came via Tencent’s social media accounts this morning, with a new poster featuring the two leads as Meng Zi Yi shows Wang Hong Yi something on her face with the same blank look she has in every scene she films.
What’s the plot of San Xian Mi Hui?
So far, there has not been an English title announced for the Chinese fantasy drama, so we’ll still have to go with San Xian Mi Hui.
We do have some information about its plot, however:
“On the Yellow River’s shore, drums a hundred feet tall thunder.
In the depths of Hanging Water Lake, the Wheel of Reincarnation tolls.
The waters of Jintang flow toward the road of the next life,
and at the ferry crossing, thousands of boats wait to depart.”A single overturning-soup incident plunges the mysterious Shuixiao clan into the suffering of “mutation.” To uncover the truth, Yi Sa (played by Meng Zi Yi) and Zong Hang (played by Wang Hong Yi) fight side by side, restart Jintang, and brave danger after danger.
In doing so, they open up for the audience a mysterious, richly layered underwater world filled with doubt and wonder.
San Xian Mi Hui is directed by Ding Ying Zhou (The Love You Give Me). It also features Kido Ma, Wang Yi and Guo Yun Qi in its supporting cast.
The drama itself is a remake of the 2023 film The River, but dragged out into 24 episodes.
I may give the film a shot, though, as its plot is unusual, at least it’s only an hour and 50 minutes in length, and it stars Jiang Pei Yao as Yi Sa instead of Meng Zi Yi. So there’s that.
As for the drama, there’s a San Xian Mi Hui trailer, by the way, if you are interested.
