Surprise premiere of Veil of Shadows – can’t get enough of its stellar cast!
Well, this is a helluva surprise to me and, probably, several million other people as YOUKU has just announced the premiere of Joseph Zeng and Jun Jing Yi’s drama Veil of Shadows.
Not only just announced it, but dropped the bombshell that Veil of Shadows will actually be premiering… tomorrow, April 1st, at 12:00 PM.
Yep, after a looooong time hoping the Chinese wuxia drama would premiere, and being severely disappointed, YOUKU has suddenly decided to release it this week.
A drama with an utterly epic cast, right down to the last guest star, and one that is written and directed by Edward Guo (Cry Me a Sad River).
The announcement of Veil of Shadows’ premiere came via YOUKU’s social media accounts earlier today, along with several posters, including character posters for the five main leads — Ju Jing Yi (In Blossom), Joseph Zeng (Feud), Chen Du Ling (Fangs of Fortune), Tian Jia Rui (Fangs of Fortune) and Yan An (Fangs of Fortune). (see posters below)
Yep, it’s somewhat of a Fangs of Fortune reunion, as three of the five leads starred in that 2024 drama, and director Edward Guo also directed it.

And, just in case you are still dubious the C-drama may be a success, I will also draw your attention to YOUKU’s other announcement that Veil of Shadows has 3 million reservations 24 hours before its premiere. (Vastly up from the 1 million it had back in August last year).
Production details for Veil of Shadows
The Chinese fantasy romance drama kicked off its filming on December 2nd, 2024 at Hengdian Studios, and announced filming had ended on April 11th, 2025.
So, yep, while it has only been a year since filming wrapped, it’s seemed a lot longer as how often do we get this stellar of a cast all in one drama, eh?
Veil of Shadows is produced by YOUKU, and co-produced by Tianhao Shengshi Entertainment, Zui Shi Culture and Ji Shi Yu.
It is written and directed by Edward Guo and, interestingly, is only 29 episodes. (I say “only”, but you know what I mean!)

For whatever it’s worth (as we all know synopsis for C-dramas are often wrong), The Veil of Shadows plot goes like this:
Lu Wuyi (played by Ju Jing Yi) is the youngest nine-tailed fox in the mysterious organization Wuxiangyue. In the mission of searching for the escaped fox demon Xiaowei with her sister Wu Wangyan (played by Chen Du Ling), she infiltrates the Wei family mansion in Luoan City.
Also infiltrating the Wei family mansion are Wu Shiguang (played by Zeng Shun Xi — aka Joseph Zeng), who is burdened with a blood feud, Ji Ling (played by Tian Jia Rui), a sorcerer of the Shilin Sect, and Li Jie (played by Yan An).
In the process of searching for the truth, they both test each other and cooperate, but their purposes are different. In the struggle for the power of the dragon god, they change the course of fate time and time again.

YOUKU has also just dropped a trailer for the first four episodes — enjoy!
