Michelle Topham The South Korean crime thriller I, the Executioner (in Korean 베테랑2) only released in the Asian country on Friday, September 13th and it had already earned more than 2 million admissions by the end of the day on September 15th.
Just three days after the film premiered.
That means I, the Executioner reached 2 million admissions faster than both The Roundup: Punishment and Exhuma earlier in the year.
Both of those films are currently the most-watched films of 2024, but both did not gain 2 million admissions until the fourth day of their release.
According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) as of today, the fourth day of its release, I, the Executioner is also now close to 3 million admissions, having already logged in 2,859,459 so far for a total gross of $20,868,548.
If this momentum continues, I, the Executioner could just end up as the most-watched film of 2024. Fingers crossed!
It may not, however, as part of I, the Executioner‘s success last weekend is due to Korea currently being in the middle of a 5-day holiday for Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving).
What is I, the Executioner and who does it star?
I, the Executioner is, of course, the sequel to the 2015 hit film Veteran.
Veteran itself earned $78.4 million during its run, and is currently the 5th most-watched Korean film of all-time in South Korea.
I, the Executioner stars Hwang Jung Min, Jung Hae In, and Ahn Bo Hyun, alongside a superb supporting cast that includes Oh Dal Soo, Jang Yoon Ju and Oh Dae Hwan.
There is no word yet on when the Korean movie will release in the west, but it will likely be soon.
