Chinese drama When Destiny Brings the Demon (2025) is a xianxia romance centered on the unconventional love story between an immortal cultivator and an unambitious modern woman.
The Premise
Liao Ting Yan (played by Wang Ying Lu) is a contemporary office worker who unexpectedly finds herself transported to a world of cultivation.
There, she becomes a disciple of the Qinggutian Sect and is suddenly assigned to serve Sima Jiao (Arthur Chen), a powerful grandmaster who has been sealed in isolation atop a mountain for 500 years.

A meet-cute of opposites
Sima Jiao is embittered and vengeful, his decades of solitude having hardened him.
Liao Ting Yan, in contrast, is the very definition of a “salted fish”, the Chinese term for a slacker with zero ambition or aspirations. Yet, her indifference to power, her tranquility, and her modern laid-back attitude soon begin to uniquely captivate him.
Despite their astonishing differences, she gradually melts his guarded heart, guiding him toward compassion and transforming his outlook.
Fans love it due to the many kissing scenes and the intense chemistry between the two leads. (They say, I can’t say I really saw it myself).

A love that spans three realms
The intense connection of Sima Jiao and Liao Ting Yan ultimately unfolds through many perils and dramatic turns across the fairy palace, demon realm, and mortal world.
And across the transmigration worlds and the modern world.

Along the way, the pair encounter betrayals, memory manipulation, fierce battles for balance, and tests that threaten to unmake them. But their strong personal bond still endures.
When Destiny Brings the Demon standout moments
The series stands out by blending traditional fantasy tropes with a playful modern sensibility.
Liao’s casual “salted‑fish” lifestyle and contemporary slang — words like boss, vacation, offer, even ex‑boyfriend — add humor and relatability to the mystical setting.
Especially as, most of the time, Sima Jiao has no idea what she’s talking about (well, she is from another world), but finds it “cute” anyway.

Technical achievements like elaborate costumes and digital animation of beings like adorably cute anthropomorphic otters and serpents also add visual richness and whimsy.
Core theme and ending (spoilers)
At its core, this is a tale of redemption, self-discovery, and love, as it demonstrates how two very different souls can heal and uplift one another.
Even if they have to travel through vastly different realms to do so.
The story culminates in their union, as love triumphs across lifetimes and realms, ultimately safeguarding both peace and their enduring connection.
The ending itself is a weak and ultimately unsatisfying one, in my opinion.
But that is due to Chinese censorship, and transmigrated people remaining transmigrated instead of returning to the modern world being a “no-no” according to the Chinese government.
So, in that respect, you can’t expect it to be much else. Sadly.
