10 reasons why C-drama A Dream Within a Dream is a fabulous watch

Michelle Topham September 5, 2025

One of my favorite Chinese dramas, not of just 2025 but of all time, is the recently ended A Dream Within a Dream.

A fantasy parody drama starring Liu Yu Ning and Li Yi Tong that is one of the most cleverly-written, funniest, and most well-acted C-drama I have watched in all my years of watching them.

And one that was hugely popular both in China (and it still is weeks after the drama ended) and internationally.

If you have not yet dipped your toe into the wonderful world of this utterly superb Chinese drama yet, here then are 10 reasons why A Dream Within a Dream is a fabulous watch.

1. Hilarious Satire of C-Drama Tropes: The drama brilliantly pokes fun at over-used historical drama clichés, like miraculous “no-death” falls, last-minute rescues and underwater kisses, weaving them into a self-aware, laugh-out-loud narrative that feels fresh and playful and incredibly fun.

So good is it, even in the more tragic scenes, you will still find yourself laughing at silly lines or ludicrous situations.

2. Engaging Transmigration Plot: The story follows Song Xiao Yu, a struggling actress who gets sucked into a script as tragic heroine Song Yi Meng.

Her continues attempts to rewrite her doomed fate that always fall short create a dynamic, unpredictable, and laugh-out-loud hilarious storyline that keeps viewers hooked.

It is also one that does a brilliant job in its first episode to not only show you what a crazy ride this one will definitely be, but also holds up the entire Chinese drama industry and their never ending tropes for ridicule.

3. Strong Chemistry Between Leads: Li Yi Tong (Song Xiao Yu) and Liu Yu Ning (Nan Heng) deliver a compelling love-hate dynamic, blending comedy and romance.

Liu Yu Ning’s Nan Heng is the first person ever to earn 700 million character popularity points

Their evolving relationship, especially in iconic scenes like the silly but sweet “white head, same heart” moment, or when they start to work together to save Song Yi Meng from her ultimate fate, is both heartfelt and very very entertaining.

In fact, I haven’t seen chemistry between two leads as strong as this in a while.

4. Liu Yu Ning’s Standout Performance: Liu Yu Ning shines as Nan Heng, showcasing his versatility by playing a cold, calculating prince with emotional depth.

A Dream Within a Dream exceeds 200 million barrage comments — yep, it’s crazy popular

Fans praise his ability to act through body language and eyes, especially when masked, which he is throughout much of the first half of the drama, making him a major draw.

5. Top-Notch Production Quality: With a big budget, the drama boasts stunning cinematography, vibrant costumes, gorgeous sets, and fluid action sequences.

The attention to detail elevates the viewing experience to one in w6hich you look forward to every new sumptuous episode, and end up rewinding scene after scene just to marvel at how pretty the darned thing is.

6. Memorable Soundtrack: The OST, including tracks like “Night Wanderer” by Chen Xue Ran, enhances the drama’s mood with clever, trope-matching music shifts and witty lyrics that feel like an inside joke for fans.

The entire soundtrack is on Spotify (above), and it’s a listen on repeat must.

7. Supporting Cast Excellence: The ensemble, including Zhu Xu Dan, Wang Yi Lun (aka Riley Wang), Wang Cheng Si and Chang Long (who gives an incredible performance), delivers memorable performances, with side characters like the 18th Prince adding humor and depth.

Every character, no matter how small, gets meaningful development, and every single actor is perfectly cast and superb in their part.

8. Fresh Take on Familiar Themes: Fans of dramas like The Romance of Tiger and Rose or Guardians of the Dafeng will enjoy how this show refines the transmigration genre, avoiding common pitfalls and delivering a very clever, meta narrative.

9. Binge-Worthy Comedy: I laughed out loud numerous times in every episode right from the first one, due to the drama’s campy humor and absurd scenarios (like the triple stabbing scene or the genius-level cleverly written dies-over-and-over-and-over-again scenes in Episode 1).

Especially for those who are looking for a lighthearted watch that is genuinely funny, but one that also has some actual depth, I can guarantee you will love A Dream Within a Dream.

10. Satisfying Ending: Despite some pacing issues that some viewers commented on (I didn’t see them, but you might), A Dream Within a Dream wraps up with a well-received double happy ending, tying together its meta themes and character arcs in a way that leaves viewers fulfilled.

I don’t remember noticing any plot points that weren’t wrapped up satisfactorily either.

A Dream within a Dream exceeds 9600 on the heat index

While some viewers on a forum I frequent commented about uneven pacing or found protagonist Son Yi Meng’s stubbornness frustrating in the middle episodes (again, I didn’t, as that’s part of the fun plot), the drama’s humor, strong performances, and incredibly creative storytelling still made A Dream Within a Dream a must-watch for almost all of them.

All in all then, if you’re looking for a fun, romantic, and absolutely addictive show that is such an easy watch, I cannot think of another Chinese drama I would recommend more.
