The new Korean romantic thriller My Name is Loh Kiwan premiered on Netflix yesterday and, just one day after the film’s release, is already in the Top 10 in 19 countries.
Those countries include Bahrain, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and the film’s home country of South Korea.
My Name is Loh Kiwan‘s Top 10 position goes from #1 in South Korea to #10 in Nicaragua and Oman, with the other 16 countries falling in different positions on the Top 10 in between.
We will have to wait until the official Netflix Top 10 global chart for Non-English Films is released on Tuesday via Tudum, however, before we can see how many views the movie has had and how many hours it has been streamed worldwide so far.
What is My Name is Loh Kiwan about?
My Name is Lohan is a movie adaptation of the novel I Met Loh Kiwan (로기완을 만났다) by Cho Hae Jin, which was published in 2011.
The film stars Song Joong Ki and Choi Sung Eun, and tells the story of North Korean defector Loh Kiwan (played by Song Joong Ki), who is trying to get legal approval to remain in Belgium as a refugee after he manages to escape from North Korea.
Along the way, he meets former international shooting expert Marie (Choi Sung Eun), a Korean-Belgian who, although she has the residency Loh Kiwan is desperate to attain, does not value her life at all.
To some extent, she has lost the will to live.
Once the two meet, however, even though their first meeting is not ideal, things begin to change for both of them.
My Name is Loh Kiwan premiered on Netflix on Friday, March 1st and is already in the Top 10 in 19 countries in just the first 24 hours since it was released.
