PLOT
The innkeeper, Ai Sixi, a staunch advocate of celibacy, finds herself branded as a “singlehood exemplar” targeted by the authorities after an absurd lawsuit.
Having once received help from her, Jing Kan is forced to marry Ai Sixi to extricate her from the predicament. Expecting to part ways immediately after the marriage, the young couple instead becomes entangled in the power struggles of the prestigious Jing family, local suppliers of tribute tea.
Under the roof of the Jing household, each branch is eccentric in its own way: the seemingly detached but sharp-minded matriarch, Wei Junyi; Jing Kan’s power-hungry and ruthless birth mother, Luo Zhusi; the arrogant and pampered eldest sister, Jing Zhenzhu; the vain, hypocritical, and honey-tongued maid, Lü Jiao’e; the spoiled, domineering, and contemptuous younger brother, Luo Aji; and the meek, slick, and worldly live-in son-in-law, Lin Donglin.
Faced with endless challenges, Ai Sixi and Jing Kan exhaust all their wits. Just when they are on the verge of giving up multiple times, they discover the true meaning of “family” within the complicated dynamics of the Jing household.
