Exhuma sells 8 million tickets faster than 12.12: The Day – Will it be 2024’s biggest hit?

Exhuma is a week ahead of 12.12: The Day in its ticket sales
It appears I may be wrong about the Korean horror film Exhuma as, when it first started racking up the moviegoers, I presumed ticket sales would eventually slow down and that last year’s 12.12: The Day would still be the eventual winner when it comes the most tickets sold in recent months.
After all, a horror film has never sold as many tickets as 12.12: The Day in South Korea’s box office history. (Over 13 million and counting, and more than $96 million worth by the end of February, 2024)
Color me surprised then that Exhuma shows no signs of slowing down in the movie theater attendance department as, according to production company SHOWBOX, Exhuma has now sold over 8 million tickets in the just over three weeks since it premiered.
That means the Korean supernatural horror film has sold that many tickets one week faster than 12.12: The Day was able to do late last year.
Considering that film was the most successful film of all of 2024 in South Korea, as well as the 6th most successful film in South Korean box office history, it is looking like, not only could Exhuma surpass 12.12: The Day‘s ticket sales, it may pass its “6th most successful” record as well.
Exhuma production details
Exhuma was directed by horror master Jang Jae Hyun, and stars the superb cast of Choi Min Sik, Kim Go Eun, Yoo Hae Jin, Lee Do Hyun, and Kim Jae Cheol.
The film was released in South Korea on February 22nd after being shown at the Berlinale film festival a week earlier.
SHOWBOX also announced earlier this week that Exhuma had been invited to the Gala section of the 48th Hong Kong International Film Festival (see listing on the festival’s website), which isn’t likely to hurt the film’s ticket sales either.
