Kim Sung Cheol and Jin Ki Joo may soon headline a new Korean drama together, as both actors are currently in discussions to star in the upcoming medical romantic-comedy Sleeping Doctor (literal title).
The project is already generating buzz for its unique blend of medical storytelling, emotional healing, and romance.
A Healing Story Rooted in Trauma and Recovery
Sleeping Doctor is described as a “human romantic comedy” that follows Hong Gyeong, a psychiatrist grappling with unresolved trauma from a past sexual assault.
Although she believes she has moved forward and opens the mental health clinic she has long dreamed of, she suddenly develops narcolepsy — falling asleep at unexpected moments, including while seeing patients.
This unusual condition threatens both her professional career and her emotional stability.
Her life takes a turning point when she meets Nam Ji Oh, an exceptionally skilled freelance doctor known for his vast medical knowledge and extraordinary memory. Through their interactions, the two doctors begin to heal one another’s emotional wounds while navigating personal struggles and professional challenges.
The drama is expected to balance humor and emotional depth, portraying both cathartic confrontations with trauma and a grounded, mature romance centered on mutual support and recovery.
Kim Sung Cheol considering the role of Nam Ji Oh
According to South Korean news reports, Kim Sung Cheol has received an offer to portray Nam Ji Oh, the brilliant freelance physician who becomes instrumental in Hong Gyeong’s journey toward healing. His agency, Story J Company, confirmed that he is currently reviewing the offer.
If he accepts, the role would mark another significant leading performance for Kim Sung Cheol, who has steadily built a strong reputation through his work in television and film.
He previously appeared in the JTBC melodrama The Wind Blows, as well as had main roles in Hellbound Season 2 and Our Beloved Summer, showcasing his range in emotionally complex roles.
Nam Ji Oh’s character has been described as a gifted doctor with a reputation for reviving struggling hospitals, earning him comparisons to legendary physicians known for their extraordinary abilities.
Jin Ki Joo to play psychiatrist Hong Gyeong?
Jin Ki Joo is also in talks to take on the female lead role of Hong Gyeong, the psychiatrist whose personal struggles form the emotional heart of the series. Her agency, Basecamp Company, confirmed that she has received the offer and is reviewing it.
Hong Gyeong is portrayed as a talented but emotionally scarred doctor who must confront her past while rebuilding her career and personal confidence.
The character promises a complex and layered performance, offering Jin Ki Joo an opportunity to explore themes of resilience, trauma, and healing.
Jin Ki Joo has previously earned praise for her versatility in both romantic and dramatic roles, and Sleeping Doctor could represent another compelling addition to her growing portfolio.
