12.12: The Day actor Park Hoon wins Best Supporting Actor at 17th Asian Film Awards (AFA)

Michelle Topham March 11, 2024

Korean actor Park Hoon won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in the smash hit Korean film 12.12: The Day at the 17th Asian Film Awards (AFA) yesterday.

It was one of two awards the South Korean action drama picked up

The film awards were held at the Xiqu Centre in Hong Kong on March 10th, with Park Hoon being nominated for his performance as Colonel Moon Il Pyeong in 12.12: The Day.

At the awards ceremony, the Korean actor beat out four equally talented actors to win the award:

  • Nakamura Shidō II who played Naniwa Mosuke in the Japanese samurai film Kubi,
  • Park Jeong Min for his performance as Jang Do Ri in the Korean action crime film Smugglers,
  • Jack Tan who played Zhang Wen Di in the Malaysian film Abang Adik,
  • and Sean Wong for his performance as Eli Cheng Yau Kit in the Hong Kong film Time Still Turns the Pages.

Other nominations for 12.12: The Day at the 17th Asian Film Awards

Alongside Park Hoon being nominated for and winning the Best Supporting Actor award, 12.12: The Day director Kim Sung Soo was nominated in the Best Director category, but lost out to Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda  for his mystery thriller Monster.

Korean actor Hwang Jung Min was also nominated in the Best Actor category for his role as Major General Chun Doo Gwang in 12.12: The Day, and Lee Mo Gae was nominated in the Best Cinematography category.

The film itself was also nominated as Best Film, but that award went to the Japanese drama Evil Does Not Exist.

The second well-deserved award 12.12: The Day won at the 17th Asian Film Awards was by editing director Kim Sang Bum for Best Editing.

Park Hoon’s Best Supporting Actor award is the first major international award he has won.

When he won the award, he dedicated it to director Kim Sung Soo.

Congratulations. If you have already seen 12.12: The Day, you will know it was very very well-deserved.

You can see Kim Sang Bum receiving his award for Best Editing in the first video below, and Park Hoon being awarded the Best Supporting Actor award in the second video — and yes, he looked very surprised!

It is an interesting, although difficult to understand awards ceremony for many, as it is carried out in so many different languages.
